Benito Juarez Birthday

Benito Juarez’ Birthday is celebrated every year in Mexico on 21st March. The reason why Benito Juarez’ birthday is celebrated is because he is known as one of the most respected leaders of Mexico. Benito is known as a liberalist and a reformist. His birthday is celebrated for his contribution towards establishing the base for modern Mexico. He defied the French occupation and brought the country up to modern standards. Benito Juarez is honored as Mexico’s first indigenous president and a founding father of Mexico’s constitution The period of his leadership is known in Mexican history as La Reforma del Norte.

Mexican kidnapping

I was recently scrolling through my Facebook page to find an odd picture of people in woods on my news feed, so naturally I clicked it.  Within a few seconds a video of a graphic execution of 3 poor Mexican women by a Mexican drug cartel began playing.  I was really disturbed by the few seconds I saw and it made me wonder why these women were executed in such a brutal manor and how often does it happen?

Surprisingly after searching through a news site for a few seconds, hundreds of search results came up.  Recently a drug gang assassinated a Mexican mayor who had a hard stance on gangs in broad daylight.  And another story that kept coming up was the public execution of a young woman who was associated with another drugs gang.

One would think a democratic country with an economy and standing like Mexico would take a hard stance on such crimes.  But the drugs trade to and from Mexico is so strong that it reaches to the deepest of the country’s politics.  Corruption is rife throughout the country’s political system with numerous politicians receiving payments from the cartels for their silence.  And those politicians and police who do take a stance against the crime repeatedly receive death threats.

The USA is currently funding and investing into programs that will stop the flow of currency in and out of the two countries, which ultimately gives the cartels such power.  But with the current power of the big drug cartels, is it possible for them to be eradicated?  I personally don’t believe that they can suddenly disappear.  There needs to be a generation long government backed awareness program that deters public support from these vicious gangs.  And most importantly there also needs to be a major crackdown on the widespread corruption currently going on.

There May Be Hope!

If anyone in America were to hear the word “recession,’ he or she would automatically know what it is all about. However, sometimes Americans fail to notice that other countries are in bad financial situations as well. Spain was in a two-year recession and has just emerged from it, with its economy growing 0.1pc over the last three months. This was confirmed by the National Statistics Institute. Spain is succeeding in restoring confidence into its economy. Also, their borrowing costs have recently been dropping as well. Spainards hope that the new data marks a definitive end to the country’s worst recession since its transition to democracy after the spectacular bursting of a decade long construction boom in 2008.

Although Spain still has a lot ahead of them, their economic situation is looking up. Americans should stop for a minute when they are worried about the state of the country, and see that other countries have pulled through it, and we can too. What is happening in Spain gives hope to all the other countries that are struggling financially right now.

Trash problem

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/spain/10450195/Mayor-of-Madrid-demands-action-as-streets-overflow-with-rubbish.html

I agree that the Street cleaners should call of the strike especially since the mayor is getting involved to try to get it called off now. But I also think that the mayor you make the street cleaner’s bosses give in to the demands of the strike because it’s not illegal to strike. The mayor can’t put workers in jail for striking so you can’t really threaten them with anything. They can’t stop them if the street cleaners have a union. Especially The trash overflow is soon to be a health risk also. If they trash keeps piling up it will be unsafe to walk around, the area the trash can spread bacterial diseases. The trash overflow would attract animals to the city. That would increase road kill that’s not being cleaned

6-12-14 AKA FIFA WORLD CUP!!!

I cannot wait for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, in Brazil, to start and I am sure that I am not alone on this topic, especially if you are a fan of the Spanish national fútbol team. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the FIFA World Cup, it is basically like the Olympics of soccer. Most of the countries from all around the world, the best soccer teams in the world, come together to compete for the World Cup. Like I mentioned in one of my earlier blogs about Shakira she actually sung the official song of the 2010 World Cup, which was held in Africa. After winning the last world cup, 2010 World Cup, and winning the 2012 European Championship, Spain, or La Furia Roja “The Red Fury”, is favored to win the 2014 World Cup as well. Spain has went undefeated in all six of their qualifying matches and drawing in two of them. Spain team might have some of the best soccer players in the world, but I cannot talk about the world cup and not mention my favorite soccer player Landon Donovan. He is plays midfield for the USA national soccer team, and he is the USA’s all time goals and assists leader.

Spanish Music and Dance

Spanish music is often considered abroad to be synonymous with flamenco, a West Andalusian musical genre, which, contrary to popular belief, is not widespread outside that region. Various regional styles of folk music abound in Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Castile, the Basque Country, Galicia and Asturias. Pop, rock, hip hop and heavy metal are also popular. In the field of classical music, Spain has produced a number of noted composers such as Manual de Falla and Enrique Grandos and an incredible amount of singers and performers. In Spain there are over forty professional orchestras. The Major opera houses include the Teatro Real, Grand Teatre del Liceu, Teatro Arriaga and El Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. There are many things to listen to in spain if you live there and even if you’re touring you can listen to good music or even see good music such as at the opera houses. Thousands of music fans also travel to Spain each year for internationally recognized summer music festivals which often features the top up and coming pop and techno acts and many more acts of music. These festivals mark Spain as an international music presence and reflect the tastes of young people in the country. The most popular musical instrument in spain is the guitar. The guitar was actually originated in Spain which is very interesting. Typical of the north are the traditional bag pipers or gaiterosmainly in Asturias and Galicia. I recommend that people look more into listen to spanish music cause it is very interesting and enjoyable.

Tradtional Spanish Clothing

Spain has come a long way with their clothing. Spain was the top rated on fashion in the 16th century. The world was very influenced from the Spanish clothing, which was known for its grace and embellishments. In Western Europe, Spanish fashions such as capes, corsets and farthingales became very popular. Farthingales were bell-shaped hoop skirts made up of whalebone, which is a piece of material from a whale. There was also a cloth and complex cages of wire underneath women’s clothing.  Women’s style of clothing during the renaissance era was very heavy. Today Spanish clothing is more modern. However traditional clothing is worn, but only for special occasions. The most traditional Spanish clothing is set-aside for special occasions and events. The most common pieces of clothing, includes the mantilla, the peineta and the gilet. The mantilla is worn at religious events like weddings. The mantilla is a veil or a scarf made of lace or silk that is worn over the head and shoulders with a high comb underneath. The comb is called the peineta, which has a curved body and long spikes to increase the mantilla’s height.  Finally the gilet is a sleeveless jacket, similar to a vest. They are fitted and embellished. Spanish people are very in touch with their history and love to continue traditions. No matter how many years pass Spain will always incorporate their traditions into their lives.

Justin Bieber Disrespects Argentinan Flag.

 Image

On the 9th of November while performing at a concert of his in Buenos Aires, young pop singer Justin Bieber appeared to use his microphone stand to mop the floor with an Argentina flag, which had been thrown at him by a fan. He claims that he thought it was a shirt, and in his defense, concerts do not have much lighting. It can be hard to give him the benefit of the doubt because he has had previous offenses. He has been accused of drawing graffiti on a wall in Brazil because there are pictures in the local media of him doing so.  He also was criticized for touching the biggest trophy in North American ice hockey, the Stanley Cup. I feel that this is a very disappointing article. It seems as though he has no discipline. If you are visiting someplace that is not your home, you are to be as respectful as possible, no matter how admired you are. That is how you avoid offending others.

Court Finds Nobody Is Responsible for 2002 Oil Spill

A Spanish court on Wednesday absolved the defendants of criminal responsibility in the sinking of a tanker 11 years ago that led to one of Europe’s worst oil spills and devastated Spain’s northwestern coastline. The only defendant that was arrested Apostolos Mangouras. He was the captain of the oil tanker. He was arrested  for disobeying orders rather than for any criminal wrongdoing or responsibility for causing the environmental disaster. Wednesday the 13th ruling came 13 months after the trial began in the city of A Coruña, in the region of Galicia. Even before the trial, the slow pace of Spanish justice had fueled grievances, particularly among citizens who helped clean up beaches fouled by the sinking in November 2002.But the trial also had political resonance because some conservative politicians who now govern Spain held top posts at the time of the spill, including the current prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, who was deputy prime minister and a government spokesman. Mr. Rajoy initially predicted that any leakage would be contained, but the tanker ended up spilling 20 million gallons of oil into the sea.
